Have you ever Googled…

“How to get clients”?

Most struggling Coaches have (The Aussie Hermit definitely has!), and it’s a terrible idea…

Why?

Because you get back 1.6 billion (with a B) pages of information.

A heck of a lot to sort through.

And, something you’re obviously not going to do (especially considering 99.9% of it is downright trash).

But the truth is – you still need clients.

So how do you find the 0.1% of experts that can give you the advice you need to get more clients?

For yours-hermity, whenever I’m looking to hire someone, I do these 2 things…

First I’ll go ask my colleagues who they think is good.

Then second, once I’ve compiled a list, I’ll look at the type of proof they use to show they’re an expert. The reason being, many Experts will put up proof that on the surface looks good, but doesn’t really prove they’re an expert.

Let’s call it “real proof” vs “vanity proof.”

For example, you’ll see business coaches say put up proof like…

“We help my clients get in front of 1 million people per month!”

Or…

“A recent ‘Like campaign’ produced 6,505 Likes!”

Or…

“We consistently get 40% email opens for our clients!”

Notice how these sound good, but don’t really prove the expert can get results that are meaningful?

It’s like…

Who cares if your client gets in front of a lot of people – how much REVENUE did you help them generate?

Who cares if you got a bunch of likes – how many CUSTOMERS did you get?

Who cares if you get 40% email opens – how many CLIENTS did you get?

Of course, they can’t tell you any of that because most often than not, their campaigns didn’t result in any revenue, customers or clients.

Hence, the need to use vanity proof.

Now, the truth is – I’m not against using vanity proof.

Not at all.

In fact – I use them on my own site!

I think it’s a great way to add an extra layer of proof and credibility that you’re an expert (even if it is just surface level proof).

HOWEVER…

What I am against is using ONLY vanity proof in place of real proof as a way to persuade someone to buy.

So if you see someone who’s only promoting vanity proof – run for the hills!

Instead, make sure the expert you learn from has results that are relevant to what you’re after.

For example, following are some of The Aussie Hermit’s metrics on my site.

And, what I’ll do is point out the real proof vs the vanity proof.

Here we go:

Years in Business: 8

A nice metric to show my experience. But doesn’t really communicate the results I’ve gotten. Vanity proof…

Hours Studying Marketing/Persuasion: 12,000+

That’s a lot of study! And demonstrates I’m an expert on the topic, BUT… it’s also vanity proof…

Money Invested in Personal Development: $350,000+

(Good proof to show how much I’ve invested in myself learning my craft, but.. it’s still doesn’t mean much in terms of results, does it? Definitely a vanity metric that one)…

Total Spent on Advertising: $7,000,000+

Now we’re talkin’. That’s a lot of profitable advertising spend! And a great proof element to boot)…

Current Advertising Spend: $400,000/mo+

More great proof. It’s good because it shows what I have is working right now…

Coaching Leads Generated: 500,000+

Yup. Nice proof with this one. It’s great because it’s a result my clients are looking for…

Coaches Helped: 4,000+

A big number! And a great ‘real proof’ point to show what I have works for many different Coaches and Experts…

Emails Sent: 1 Billion+

A good metric to show I have a lot of experience with email, but the truth is – it’s vanity proof all the way…

Revenue Generated for Clients: $40,000,000+

Ok, this is the big one. The result all my clients are looking for – revenue in their pocket. And this shows I can deliver on that front in spades. So I could have really just shown this one – but adding the others seems so much more impressive, right?

So now you see the difference between real proof and vanity proof.

Interesting, ay?

And, important to know so next time an expert tries to win you over with vanity proof alone (hint: it’s most of them), you won’t get plundered.

What I do is brilliant.

But the truth is, there’s nothing really special about yours-hermity.

Sure – I can send emails that entertain, educate, and make a whole lot of dosh…

But that’s simply because I follow a system.

You see…

It’s the system that shows me where to get the entertaining content…

It’s the system that shows me what to do to present that content in a valuable way…

And it’s the system that shows me how to transition to my offer so that my list buys over and over again.

So as much as I’d like to claim credit that I’m naturally brilliant.
